2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 Custom: A truck you can use

While the economic recovery and low gas prices have boosted sales of chrome-drenched execu-trucks—so, basically luxury cars with beds—theres a temptation to forget that many folks who buy full-size pickups still want to use them as, you know, trucks. For these people, Chevy has introduced the 2015 Silverado Custom package, a back-to-basics hauler that adds a dash of comfort and style—but not so much that it becomes too precious to actually use (or afford). Available only with the Silverados double-cab body style and based on the base, cloth-upholstered LS trim level, the Custom package rides on big, five-spoke 20-inch wheels and is dressed up with chrome bumpers, mirror caps, and door handles. The interior gets a 40/20/40-split front seat, cruise control, power door locks and windows, and Chevrolets MyLink connectivity package with 4G Wi-Fi. The Custom package will be available with the Silverados base, 285-hp 4.3-liter V-6 or its available 355-hp 5.3-liter V-8, as well as the choice of rear- or four-wheel drive. Prices for rear-drive models with a V-8 underhood start at $33,820, representing about $1700 in savings, according to Chevy spokesman Tom Wilkinson. That money, we suppose, could be used to actually customize this so-called “Custom” model. Four-by-four V-8 models come in at a starting price of $37,800. Really want that V-6? It costs only $245 less than the V-8, so other than to perhaps save 1 or 2 mpg, we cant imagine why anyone would order it, especially with fuel costs where they currently are. “Were really trying to emphasize the V-8 model,” said Wilkinson. “We havent had anything exactly packaged in this sweet spot [of the full-size truck market].” The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado Custom is making its debut at the 2015 Chicago auto show, and dealers will be able to place orders starting later this month.
